Common Misconceptions About the 5-Panel Drug Test
If you opt for a standard 5-panel, you may very well receive negative results, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your test subject is clear of drug abuse as they only test for 5 substances. While the 5-panel drug test has historically been an industry-standard for basic pre-employment or workplace testing, drug trends are changing.
At Test Smartly Labs, we’re here to customize your drug panel, and we understand how to guide our clients to make educated choices and recognize signs to look for. Just some of the drugs we can test for include:
- Marijuana (THC, Cannabis)
- heroin (diacetylmorphine)
- Opiates (Natural)
- Opioids (Synthetic Opiates)
- Ecstasy (MDMA)
- GHB (Date Rape)
- LSD (Lyseric acid diethylamide)
- Methaqualone (Quaalude)
- Bath Salts (MDPV, 3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone)
- Narcotics (Schedule II & III)
- Fentanyl (Sublimaze, Duragesic)
- Suboxone (buprenorphine)
- Hydromorphone (Dilaudid)
- Methadone (Dolophine)
- Meperidine (Demerol)
- Oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet)
- Morphine, Opium, Codeine
- Narcotics (Schedule IV)
- Xanax (alprazolam)
- Soma (carisoprodol)
- Klonopin (clonazepam)

Knowledge is Power
Instant Drug Screens and Lab-Based Drug tests are very different procedures. Instant Screens (often mistakenly called drug tests) are completely inconclusive in the matter of confirming a positive drug test. Its only value is to rule out certain drugs that don’t display non-negative results.
If an Instant Screen does not trigger a non-negative finding, it must be sent to a Diagnostic Lab for further lab-based testing so the metabolite can be isolated and verified/confirmed. Even after the confirmation process at the lab, a Medical Review Officer must gather prescription information from the donor to see if the substance identified is legally-prescribed and occurs at therapeutic levels in the donor’s body as the prescription should be. Only then can the test be utilized and communicated with confidence.
We recommend Lab-Based Drug Tests combined with Lab Confirmations and reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO). Not only can we perform a deeper analysis of non-negative results, but we also maintain a legal chain-of-custody that will hold up in court.
Non-negative test results don’t necessarily mean someone has been abusing/using drugs, and we make it our goal to establish the accuracy you need to make important, life-changing decisions with confidence. Whether you need results to determine someone’s continued employment, parole violations, or as part of a child custody case, accurate and reliable results are critical.
