Agency Drug Testing

The Department of Transportation was established by Congress in 1967. Also referred to as DOT, its mission is to:

“Serve the United States by ensuring a fast, safe, efficient, accessible, and convenient transportation system that meets our vital national interests and enhances the quality of life of the American people, today and into the future.”

The DOT regulates every aspect of transportation across the nation. They place a very high value in drug and alcohol-free operators. There are strict rules and regulations in place for anyone operating a mode of transportation that falls under DOT jurisdiction.

Agencies under DOT jurisdiction

There are several agencies regulated by the DOT that comply with its rules and regulations – including its policies and processes on drug and alcohol testing. Some of them include:

  • United States Coast Guard (USCG)
  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
  • Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
  • Federal Transit Administration (FTA)
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
  • Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)
  • Office of the Secretary (OST)

Each of the industries has specific rules for drug and alcohol testing. As outlined by the DOT, these regulations cover

“approximately 12.1 million transportation employees who perform safety-sensitive functions.”
